A 12 to 18 point 1NT opening allows other one bids to be natural and distributional. A step to one of a suit initiates relays. Openings are rounded out light artificial 2C opening, 2NT shows a preemptive minor two-suiter, 2D all other preemptive 5-5s and weak twos.
